07/08/11 - 18 Hole Stableford (16th Round of Golfer of the Year)
It was a Ronayne 1, 2; on the 16th Round of the Golfer of the Year Stableford at the weekend. David 'pipped' his older brother Gerry by the narrowest of margins to win the 18 Hole Stableford. Niall McNicholas (the man who recorded his 1st hole-in-one last week) completed the top 3. Former GAA star and All-Ireland_Junior_Winner_(1997); John McCallion won the 19+ category, with highly credible 39pts. Mayo that day defeated Kerry by the very mimimun; on a scoreline of: Mayo 2-08; Kerry 1-10 (on a sunny Saturday evening in Ennis). Lets hope its a 'good_omen' for Sunday week (21 August) when Mayo take on the might of Kerry in the Semi-Final of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. The Mens returns can be seen below:...
Winner: David Ronayne (8) 42pts; 2. Gerry Ronayne (5) 41pts; 3. Niall McNicholas (5) 40pts; 4. Kevin Feeney (11) 39pts; 5. John McCallion (20) 39pts; 6. Sean Kavanagh (8) 38pts; 7. Philip Irwin (20) 38pts; 8. Simon Ronayne (8) 36pts; 9. Joseph Gallagher [Jnr] (13) 36pts; 10. Peter Moore (15) 36pts.
Category Winner: 19+ Handicap: John McCallion (20) 39pts....................... .............................. ............................................... ......_.....
Footnote: See if you can pick out the rare but incredible goal from Mayo legend James Nallen (against Kerry in 1996 All-Ireland Semi). He started the move and ended it in style. Click here to see the video. However, it was the last time Mayo defeated Kerry in the Senior Football Championship.

24/07/11 - 18 Hole Stableford (15th Round of Golfer of the Year)
Damien Moran was the eventual winner of the 18 hole stableford (shooting +4 gross), played on Sunday last. Damien has been in fine form all season, particularly in the interclub. He maintained his unbeaten interclub record this year which now at stands at 38 matches (his interclub career), stretching back to the late 1990's. This is surely one of the most impressive records in all of interclub golf, not just in Connaught but on the whole of the 'Emerald_Isle'. JR Ingham was unlucky to finish second with a fine score of 41pts. Charlie Quinn was 'reeling_in_the_years' shooting 40pts of his own, to complete the top 3.

10/07/11 - 18 Hole Stableford (13th Round of Golfer of the Year)
There was no holding back in the penultimate competition, before the Mens Captains Prize next week. The scoring was more than impressive with 44 points, the leading score. Four points separated Ormsby Cup semi-finalists Dean Gillespie (eventual winner) and Dougie Cairns (eventual 'bronze medal position' winner). The pair will do battle in the matchplay event; in just over a fortnight's time for a place in the matchplay final. Current runaway Golfer of the Year 2011 leader 'Deano' has also claimed the GOY title; after this impressive win. John McCallion who was runner-up, is spending a lot more time on the golf course (after hanging up his GAA size 9 boots for good, in 2009). He is now giving his golf game, the time and dedication that it merits. Another 'young rising star in the making' was the 19+ category winner; Jack Feeney. Jack (son of the incoming Mens Club Captain - Kevin) has caddied for his dad, in multiple interclub matches. This invaluable experience will surely stand to the young man; and will surely be a household name like 'Dad' for the future. Family man; Kevin (and ferocious practicer - ala Vijay Singh) has really got the impetus to get his whole 'clan' involved. His wife (Patricia) has only taken up the game in the last couple of years. However, she has already represented the club in the 'Irish Mixed Foursommes' (for the first time, this year). Its great to see that the talent, (particularly the junior golfers) is still coming through;
though arguably the Junior system has fallen along way short in comparison to other clubs, (i.e. regarding professional coaching on a bi-weekly basis; Junior days, etc.)
as of the last 10+ years. However, this has not dampened the junior success coming through, with Frank Duffy managing the Kenny Cup team; to a Runner-up position in 2009. The Swinford team that day were Niall McNicholas, Stephen McNicholas, Neil Fallon, Fergal Loftus, and Tony McDermott. It must be noted that since 2009, Swinford have not entered any Junior teams in any G.U.I competitions; which shows that numbers are down. The club must do more if we are to keep producing 'fine_home-grown' talent; particularly as there are no young lady golfers coming through the ranks, at all. The mens returns can be seen below:
Winner: Dean Gillespie (15) 44pts; 2. John McCallion (21) 43pts; 3. Dougie Cairns (11) 40pts; 4. Sean O'Hara (18) 38pts; 5. Matthew Duggan (16) 38pts; 6. Declan Munnelly (12) 38pts; 7. Jack Feeney (19) 37pts; 8. Nigel Sweeney (19) 37pts; 9. Alan Gurren (18) 37pts; 10. Gerry Ronayne (5) 37pts.

03/07/11 - 18 Hole Stableford (12th Round of Golfer of the Year)
The 18 Hole Stableford was won by Danny Lambe. Known by some as 'Danny_Daly', the big hitter ripped it around the 'sun-drenched' park-land course in 84 blows (equating to 42points). Dean Gillespie, current leader of golfer of the year, was the runner-up. 16-handicapper Dean has dropped 3 shots since the start of the golf season, and is surely the form player in the club. It just goes to show that he's reeking the benefits of endless daily practice. In the 'bronze medal position' was one of the stars of the Hardy_Bucks; Eugene_Maloney (a.k.a. 'Uncle_Mick'). Sean McLoughlin continue his fine Interclub form from the Cecil Ewing to capture the 19+ category prize. The returns from the 18 hole stableford can be seen below:
Winner: Danny Lambe (18) 42pts; 2. Dean Gillespie (16) 41pts; 3. Eugene Maloney (18) 39pts; 4. Enda Gurren (16) 37pts; 5. Sean McLoughlin (20) 37pts; 6. Christopher Ronayne (16) 37pts; 7. Mulligan Cup
26/06/11 - 18 Hole Stroke (11th Round of Golfer of the Year)
Arguably the fastest 3-ball in the history of the Mulligan Cup, could be seen on Sunday last. This 'enigmatic' group consisted of Niall McNicolas (5); Michael Rooney (8); and John Rooney (13). The lads did the full 18 holes, round the Brabazon Park course in a 'whopping'; 2hrs 45mins (starting at 7.25am and finishing at 10.10am). The gents didn't set the world alight with their play, though they didn't lament over it either. Swinford Golf Club has been dogged in recent years by slow play. It was the reason; the new "Avoid Slow Play" billboards were erected around the course, in the last 3 years. Suffice to say, the message is now getting across to all members, to "play without delay". Swinford_Golf_Club_wishes_everyone_to_enjoy their_round_of_golf._However,_you_also_should_have_the_common_sense_to_think_of_your_fellow_competitor;_playing_directly_in_front_and_behind_ you._If_you_lose_a_hole_from_the_group_in_front_of_you;_you_are_oblidged_to_call_the_group_behind_you,_through. The highlight of the play from the Mulligan Cup, apart from the excellent low scoring (with 14 players bettering the par of 70) went to the 'colourful' Kevin Quinn, who made a remarkable par on the 3rd hole while giving renditions of William_Wordsworth's_-_Daffodills. The 18 Hole Stroke Competition for the Mulligan Cup was won by current GOY leader, Dean Gillespie. Surely the young man has done enough to fend off any late challenges for the Golfer_of_the_Year prize. There are now only 3 rounds left. The returns for the Mulligan Cup can be seen below:

Chesire Home Annual Classic
The Annual Chesire Home Classic was played on Saturday last. The course was in excellent condition, but again some tricky pin positions were the talk of the golf clubhouse and inevitably hampered the scoring. The winners blew away the rest of the teams and were a full 8 points clear of the runners-up. The winning score didn't break the century of points, which in this format was somewhat surprising. However, it shows how tough the course is playing these days; particularly tough pins on the 5th and 7th holes respectively on Saturday. The top 8 teams can be seen below:

Presidents Prize
04/06/11 - 18 Hole Stroke (Mens Section) (8th Round of Golfer of the Year)
Simon Ronayne made it back to back wins, by capturing the 2011 Presidents Prize. He also made the impressive feat of being the first man in the club to win ‘the 1st Major of the year', three times in a row; when he shot an impressive 65. Michael Cawley who was the second player on the course (at 6.30am) held the early clubhouse lead with a 68. Outstanding at it was, it could have been so much better (and possibly the winning total), if it weren't for a disastrous triple bogey at the last. The ‘Beast' brought in an imposing 65 later on in the morning; following on from his good form in the Senoirs (the Tuesday night Interclub match played previously). Sean McLoughlin had 66 later on in the afternoon. However, it was the man from Park Road who topped the leaderboard; as he followed Sean in with a remarkable 65 (+3 gross). What made Simon's round all the more astonishing was that he went was +3 for the 1 st nine gross and went level par on the back nine; to recapture the Presidents Prize. The returns can be seen below:

Lambe Cup (Sponsored by O'Connell's Chemist)
01/05/11 - 18 Hole Stroke (3rd Round of Golfer of the Year)
-
The 18 Hole Stroke Competition for the Lambe Cup was played in difficult windy conditions with a tough course set up. Brutal pins on the 5th, 7th, and 9th made scoring particularly difficult on the fast dried out greens, which resembled something from the Masters at Augusta. Everyone who played has their own story on the 7th but in my particular group; I saw a putt from the bottom of the green go 2 feet above the hole, roll back down past the hole and all the way off the green. It resembled something similar to
Tiger_Woods_on_the_controversial_17th_at_Valderrama_in_2000. On that day, Tiger's approach looked to be inch perfect when he played a sublime 2nd shot to the Par 5. To everyone's amazement his ball rolled off the green all the way back into the water. He ended up losing the tournament. The returns can be seen below:
Winner: Rob Thornburg (23) 72 Nett; 2. Alan Gurren (17) 73 Nett; 3. David Ronayne (8) 75 Nett; 4. Aiden McLoughlin (19) 75 Nett; 5. Gerry Ronayne (5) 76 Nett; 6. Martin McNeela (27) 76 Nett; 7. Swinford Golf Club Annual Classic
The Annual Swinford Golf Club Classic was played in difficult windy conditions with a tough course set up. On that day he paired up wih his former neighbours 'The Rooney Twins'. The lads that day 'shot the lights out' with 8 birdies.

Dick Crowley Cup
24/04/11 - 18 Hole Stroke (2nd Round of Golfer of the Year)
-
The 18 Hole Stroke Competition for the Dick Crowley Cup was played in ideal conditions with an excellent turn out by all. The course was in fantastic shape with the greens running the fastest they've ever been. With a new mover being purchased last week and the sprinkler in full operation; the course is well set up for a hot summer.
