Match Reports and Build-up

Quarter-Final Match Reports (Round 2 matches)

02/10/2011

Eamon Ring and Martin McNeela were surprise winners over the Ronayne 'father and son combination'; of David and Jason. With shots at a premium in this format, Ring (i.e. taking a staggering 13 shots off David) and McNeela (i.e. taking a staggering 15 shots off David) used them well over the duration of the match. Jason would take 10 shots off his dad. However, despite all the shots the match would go the distance. Ring and McNeela were 1up playing the 18th. Jason had an 8 footer up the hill on the last, to keep the match alive. He narrowly missed giving Martin and Eamon a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

01/10/2011

Kevin Feeney and James Clasby were 'good money' for their 2&1 victory over Club Championship winner PJ Hennigan and Tony Spain. Feeney and Clasby booked their place in the semi-final with some fine short game skills; particularly near the end of the match. They now await the other semi's to be completed, and the open draw; to see who they are paired against.

Last 16 Match Reports (Round 1 matches)

12/09/2011

The Ronayne brothers powered into the Quarter-Finals of the competition with narrow wins in all 3 of their consecutive matches. There will be an open draw for the quarter final matches (on Wednesday 14th of September); once all matches are complete in the first round. Stay tuned to find out the draw.

10/09/2011

The tie of the round saw '2011 Golfer of the Year contenders'; Simon and Dean come out on top. In terrible; blustery conditions (with heavy showers), the attractive fourball played some impressive golf. Simon and Dean took an early lead and were 3up after 4 holes, after Dean hit an impressive 3-wood to the 4th hole (such was the strength of the wind); making a solid par. The 'Rooney Brothers' were let off the hook on the 7th after Simon missed a short birdie putt. At the very next hole, the 'twins' would start to up the ante; after Michael made a very impressive up and down par to win the 8th; leaving the brothers 2down. At the very next hole John had a 18 foot putt up the hill to narrow the gap to 1 hole. However, 'a_rush_of_blood_to_the_head', would leave a tricky 4 footer down the hill for a half, which he would go on to miss. This was the turning point in the match; as there were now 3 holes in the game. Tropical_Storm_Lee was in full flight throught. This was truly seen on the 11th hole. The hole played so long that it was barely reachable with a driver and 3-wood; for the big hitting bunch. With gusts of 80mph - 100mph, the Out of Bound posts to the right of the path on the 5th fairway were uprooted by the elements; and blown inland 10 feet. It truly showed the strength of the elements; that the players had to endure and overcome. Dean would truly master the elements in the fourball, after he yet again found the heart of the 13th green (4th hole second time round) with his trusty 3-wood. His par would be good enough to

wwin the hole; to give him and his partner a 4 hole lead. Michael had a great chance at the very next (par 5 - 14th) to get a hole back, but his misread birdie effort (from 7 feet) would not find the bottom of the cup. His partner John narrowly missed out on a birdie of his own, when his chip went into the hole; and miraculously came out again. This now left the game 'dormie' with Dean and Simon leading 4up with 4 holes to play. John made a solid par on the 15th (with a shot), though Dean would make an excellent up and down par of his own (with a shot); to close out the match. The twins were very disappointed after the match (as they couldn't get out of third gear), though they can hold their heads high; after arguably coming up against the strongest pair in the competition.

08/09/2011

Another keenly fought contest, saw 2011 Ormsby Cup semi-finalists' John Forkan and Danny Lambe, take on former Captains of the club John Sheahan (2007) and Niall O'Neill (2006) respectively. Indeed the interclub experience of the latter seemed to pay-off in this match, with 'Sheets' and 'Niall-O' surprising the townie's with a 1 hole win; in a keenly fought contest.

Build up to Last 16 (Round 1 matches - 01/09/2011)

The tie of the round must be the clash of the 'Rooney Twins'; Michael and John against the 'GOY Table toppers' Dean_Gillespie and Simon Ronayne. Dean it must be said is the form player in the club to date this year taking a commanding 22 point lead going into the final 2 GOY events. Simon claimed the Presidents Prize this year making it three in a row (in the last three years). However, John had a notable win this year, taking the Captains Prize in a playoff. Michael's game is slowly coming after changing his set of clubs. However, he was a notable absentee from the interclub season this year (the first time since he started playing for the club in 2001; at the tender age of 15). The strong form of Dean and Simon may be the deciding factor in this match. (back to top)

Draw for the 32 (players) strong competition

The will be an open draw for each round of the tournament, once all matches have been complete (in the affected round).
